Why was Saint James the Greater named a saint?

St. James was one of the 12 apostles of Jesus who carried on the Lord's work after his death and resurrection and died as a martyr. Martyrdom was considered a one way, first class ticket to heaven by early Christians and he was declared a saint based on that martyrdom.
