Although I don't know of any actual historical records of Young ever drinking, it would not be surprising in the least that he drank. These are the reasons why he probably drank: Young was a convert to the church so he would have drank anyway before he was baptized. Although Latter Day Saints today do not drink alcohol that was not necessarily the case in the early years of the LDS church. Mormons believe in modern revelation. The reason they do not drink is because they believe that Joseph Smith received a revelation in 1833 that listed things that are good for the body and things that are bad for the body. This revelation can be found in their book "Doctrine and Covenants" - section 89. can be found on lds.org even after that revelation was received, it was not taken as a commandment until years later. Brigham Young may easily have been among the many members of the LDS church who drank and used tobacco in the early years of the church.
