James Rolph (born August 23, 1869 in San Francisco, California; died June 2, 1934 in Santa Clara County, California) succeeded Clement C. Young as the twenty-seventh Governor of California, serving between January 6, 1931 and June 2, 1934. Following Rolph's death in office, Frank Merriam (born December 22, 1865 in Hopkinton, Iowa; died April 25, 1955 in Long Beach, California) became the twenty-eighth Governor of California, serving between June 2, 1934 and January 2, 1939.
