How may total ounces can you take on airplane?

The liquids that you can carry onto a plane are limited to however many containers you can fit into a quart ziploc-type bag. No one container may have originally contained more than 3 ounces. So if you have a 6oz tube of toothpaste that is only half-full, it could be confiscated.
