Since the 1800s, Malta has primarily been under British rule, having been formally ceded to Britain in the Treaty of Paris in 1814 following the Napoleonic Wars. Prior to that, during the late 18th century, Malta was briefly occupied by the French under Napoleon Bonaparte from 1798 to 1800. After World War II, Malta gained independence from Britain in 1964. No other countries have conquered Malta during this period.
