From a realistic standpoint, the only suitable renewable source to assist in the energy needs of schools is for solar heating of water or geothermal heat pumps for supplemental heating in temperate areas. Other forms of renewable energy are just not advanced enough at this time to provide any real assistance in a typical schools needs.
From an education standpoint, solar panels could be installed and monitored. When tied into a gridable system, they could be a great method of showing students what their actual energy demands are and what solar panels can actually produce.
