Sea Cottage was now very much the idol of the crowds and the Guineas looked a good trial for the upcoming Rothmans July Handicap (run over 2100m at that time). Certainly, if anywhere near his best form, he would be extremely hard to oppose in the big race. But three weeks before the July, the racing world was thrown into turmoil when it was announced that Sea Cottage had been shot in the hindquarters by a sniper, allegedly in the pay of one or more bookmakers. This heinous crime sent shockwaves not just through the sport of kings but also through the public at large and eventually one Johnny Nel was convicted and sentenced to six years imprisonment (of which three were suspended).
