If you're looking for recommendations, it would help to know what kind of books you like.
Most of Charles Dickens' works are quite good, as is pretty much anything by Samuel Clemens/Mark Twain.
I personally like science fiction and fantasy, and would particularly recommend Larry Niven, Terry Pratchett and Clifford Simak.
If you like adventure, you might try Edgar Rice Burroughs (yes, he wrote Tarzan; no, the books are not much like the "Me Tarzan, you Jane" stereotype of the movies... Tarzan in the books is actually quite intelligent) or Robert E. Howard (Conan). If you prefer more realistic adventures, try Ernest Hemingway.
If you like romance ... dunno; I don't like romance novels, so I don't read any (the Mary Stewart books about King Arthur are about as "romancy" as I care to get; the first one in the series is "The Crystal Cave").
Similarly, I don't much care for horror; a lot of people like Stephen King, though I think he "pads" his novels too much (he's a passable short story writer, though). HP Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe are other (and to my taste better) writers in that genre.
