What engine did the wright brothers use in the 1903 flight?

They built their own engine. The problem up until that time was not knowing how to fly. The Wright brothers and many others flew gliders regularly. The issue had been making an engine that supplied enough horsepower and yet was light enough to fly. THIS is where they managed to make the difference!
