Henry Francis Cary was the first translator. His translation of The Inferno was first published by James Carpenter in London in 1805. Cary later published the full Divine Comedy in 1814 at his own expense since the publisher was unwilling to take the risk. It gained recognition and was later picked up and reprinted by Taylor and Hessey of London in 1819. Though the first translation published in the United States is more well known as the translator was Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. His edition was published by Ticknor and Fields of Boston in 1867.
