Is 2.56 greater or less than 2.056?

To compare any decimals

First bring the decimals to the same number of decimal places, by inserting suffix 'zeroes(0)'.

Hence

2.56 & 2.056, becomes 2.560 & 2.056 (3 d.p. in this case).

Drop the decimal point

Hence

2560 & 2056

Drop the prefix unitary '2'

560 & 056

Drop the prefix '(trivial) zero'

560 & 56

Clearly 560 > 56

Hence it follows that 2.56 > 2.056
