The bald eagle has been the national bird of the United States since 1782. Famously, Benjamin Franklin preferred the wild turkey as a national symbol. The bald eagle first appeared as a symbol of America on a copper cent minted in Massachusetts in 1776! Happily, the bald eagle was recently removed from the Endangered Species list.
