How much money a socail worker makes hourly?

According to a May 2010 salary survey by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average yearly wage of social workers working with children, families and schools was $43,850. Dividing this by the 52 weeks in a year, the weekly pay averaged $843.27. The middle 50 percent of such social workers, between the 25th and 75th percentile, had yearly incomes of $32,270 to $52,450, which works out to weekly wages between $620.58 and $1,008.65. The variances in incomes were attributable to such factors as experience, geographical location, and type of employer. For example, the top-paying employers were elementary and secondary schools, where social workers made an average of $57,100 a year, or $1,098.08 a week.

• Social workers in health care earned an average yearly salary of $49,200, according to the bureau, or $946.15 a week. Those at the 25th percentile had annual wages up to $37,040, or $712.31 a week. Health care social workers at the 75th percentile made up to $59,260 a year, or $1,139.62 per week. The biggest employers were general medical and surgical hospitals, which paid an annual mean wage of $54,550, or about $1,048.85 weekly.

  Mental Health and Substance Abuse

  • Mental Health and Substance Abuse social workers earned an average annual salary of $41,880. The weekly salary for this average was $805.38. The 25th percentile earned up to $30,870 per year, or $593.65 per week. The 75th percentile earned up to $50,420 per year, or $969.62 each week. The highest concentration of social workers in this field was in psychiatric and substance abuse hospitals, where annual averages were $48,280, or $928.46 per week.

    All Others

    • Social workers who do not fit into the previously mentioned categories earned an average annual salary of $52,270, for a weekly average of $1,005.19. The middle 50 percent earned annual salaries between $37,550 and $65,970, or $722.11 to $1,268.65 per week. Higher salaries are attributable in part to the fact that some of the social workers counted by the bureau in this category are in administrative or senior research positions, and many of them work for local and state governments. Those employed by the federal executive branch had the highest average annual wages, at $69,830, or $1,342.88 a week.
