As with most artistic expressions, the interpretation is largely left up to the artist and the viewer. With tattoos, the bearer of such can have an array of different reasons for getting any particular symbol. This being said, the butterfly can and has been used in Christian artistry to represent the metamorphoses of a new believer by casting off the old and taking on a whole new form. This idea is expressed in 2 Corinthians 5:17, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, the old has gone, the new has come!" (NIV). While this is true, their are many different reasons for someone to get a butterfly tattooed on their body, and that reason is known only to them and those they chose to share it with.
