Sienna is a limonite clay - iron bearing. Originally from Siena in mid-north Italy, though those original clays are now mined out. Current supplies come from Sardinia, and Sicily, and also from the Appalachian Mountains.

As to processing, it requires the removal of any grit or lumpy material, followed by crushing and grinding to reach the desired fineness.
