What does the greenhouse effect do and what would happen without it?

The earth would become very cold and life would cease to exist. A natural greenhouse effect is necessary to keep the earth warm enough for life.

However, since we started seriously burning fossil fuels about 150 years ago a lot more carbon dioxide and methane has been released into the atmosphere making the earth warmer. Most climate scientists agree that the earth is gradually getting warmer.
