How old are elderly people?

Ask this of a 10 year old child, a sixteen year old girl, a twenty four year old male and a thirty nine woman and you will get a different answer from each. It is all in one's perspective. According to the World Health organization, most of the world's developed countries have accepted the chronological age of 65 years as an arbitrary definition of 'elderly' or older person. In the world's poorer countries like Africa and say, Haiti for example, this does not adapt well and would be set lower chronologically. Elderly is often associated with the age at which one can begin to receive pension benefits. At the moment, there is no United Nations standard numerical criterion, but the United Nations has agreed the cutoff is 60+ years to refer to the older population.
