Every point on Earth that's exactly mid-way between the north and south poles

has zero latitude, neither north nor south. If you draw enough of these points,

they blend into a line called the "equator". Points closer to the north pole have

north latitude, whereas, exactly as you might expect, points closer to the south

pole have south latitude.
