State Governments:
State governments provide a wide range of services. They maintain Law and Order, enforce criminal law, protect property, and regulate business. Additionally, they supervise public education, provide public health and welfare programs, build and maintain highways, operate state parks and forests, and regulate use of state-owned land.
Local Governments:
Local governments have perhaps the greatest impact on all of our daily lives. At the same time, it is on the local level that citizens have the greater opportunity to influence government. They are created entirely by the states and have only those powers and functions that the states give them.
