first you have to change this into equation by "translating" it into math. so

let x= the first angle

90-x ( because complementary means they add up to 90) = the second angle

x= (90-x) + 20

x+x = 90-x+20+x

2x = 90-20

2x = 70

x = 35

the smaller angle = 35 degrees
