Use Algebra!

X/12=1/4

cross multiply

4x=12

clear the 4

x=3

substitute in original equation.

3/12=1/4

Also if you multiply the bottom number by 3 then you will get 12ths (3X4=12).

Now multiply the top number by 3 (3X1=3)

answer is 3/12
There are 3 because 3/12 equals 1/4
