Joe Montana was offered three jerseys when he joined the Chiefs. #3 which was his number at Notre Dame, #16 which was his number in San Francisco but which had been retired by the Chiefs (for Len Dawson, who gave his blessing for Montana to wear it), and #19. Montana chose #19.
