What does Henry Every's flag colors mean?

The black one meant ya' still had a bit of a chance at staying alive once they caught up to you. It was an offer of "quarter," (mercy) if you didn't resist.

The red version of the flag meant no quarter given, no quarter asked. Basically, it meant you were doomed if they caught you and you didn't win the fight.
