Oil pipelines (large ones) can be owned and/or operated by:

  • the oil company producing the oil for its own oil
  • a company formed to build and operate the pipeline and then rents the service to the oil producers
  • a government which either operates the pipeline and then rents the service to the oil producers or hires a third party to operate the system
