How do you fight in Minecraft?

you walk up to monsters or other players (in smp) and left click while the "x" in the middle of the screen is on them. it is better to have a sWord and armor that you can craft while fighting. you can also enchant weapons and armor on an enchantment table as of minecraft 1.0
