Simple question, complex answer. First, on revolvers, the serial number is the one stamped on the butt of the revolver. Other numbers are assembly numbers, and may not match the full number. The SN MAY have a letter prefix, such as V for the WW II Victory model, or J for certain small framed revolvers, such as the Model 36. You can contact S&W for information on when your gun was shipped, or you can check the Standard Catalogue of S&W handguns.
