Because those resources (any kind of ore, for instance) are not renewable and their sustainability is bound up with the law of supply and demand. Moreover, some kinds of extraction( fracking, for instance) pose a major threat to the environment, while others, which cause land subsidence,to name but one drawback of extraction, are used to engineer industrial processes that cause highly toxic pollution, and finally and perhaps unexpectedly because extraction of rare earth minerals, magnesium and other substances impoverish the earth around quarries, thereby impoverishing the quality of the foods that end up in our plate.
