What are mechanical waves and what do they travel through?

Mechanical waves are waves that require a medium to travel through, such as air, water, or solids. These waves transfer energy by causing particles in the medium to oscillate back and forth in the direction of wave propagation. Sound waves and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves.
