It seems strange for someone to say they were "stung" rather than "bitten" by an asp, but if you know a little bit about the burrowing asps of the Middle East and Africa, the term seems to make sense.

The burrowing asps are snakes who have back-facing venomous fangs that protrude from their mouths. They do not need to open their mouths in order to kill their prey, and they usually use only one fang.

This one-fanged, closed-mouth attack is probably what is referred to when one says "stung by an asp."
