"A Psalm of David. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He causes me to lie down in pleasant pastures; He leads me beside the restful waters.
He restores my soul; He guides me in straight paths for His name's sake.
Even as I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for ever."
In this famous and beautiful Psalm, King David is expressing his absolute trust in God. King David was pursued and maligned by enemies and occasionally had to endure thirst (Psalms 62:1-2), mortal danger and privation, but his love for God was so great that during the times of distress he could already feel the vindication, safety and comfort which God eventually bestowed upon him. He compares himself to a sheep, which feels no apprehension because of the care that its shepherd lavishes upon it.
