Basic rules of gun safety- always treat a firearm as if it loaded until YOU check that it is not. Do not point a gun at anything you do not intend to shoot. Keep your finger OUT of the trigger guard until you are ready to fire. Always be certain of your target and what may be BEYOND your target. Store firearms and ammunition in a secure manner.
