The Mohawk Indians were in fact farmers. Their primary crops were corn, beans gourds, squash and pumpkins. Their villages were often surrounded by walls made of tree trunks sharpened at the tops. Their houses (lodges) were well constructed and occupied by extended family. The fields and crops of the Mohawks were grown outside thier villages. Pumpkins were grown in mounds, beans and squash were grown together amongst the corn. Fertilizer was usually vegatable compost or fish protien. The Mohawks susidized thier diet with fish, wild game, nuts and berries that were found locally.
