a stereotype is a generalized perception of first impressions: behaviors presumed by a group of people judging with the eyes/criticizing ones outer appearance (or a population in general) to be associated with another specific group.

example; a goth is perceived to wear a lot of black clothing, be pale in complexion, act depressed or unhappy most of the time. However, this is a generalized perception, as people who wear black are not all goths, or goths do not always wear black.
