Why were there so many casualties during the war in Vietnam?

Don't quote me, but I am pretty sure that the viet cong had AK-47's. We were still using the m1 mainly, and the M-16's had problems due to the amount of gunpowder in the .223 shell. And still today our only competition is the AK-47. So i can see why we had a large Kia ratio
