Why only one sperm cell succeeds in fertilizing the egg?

Only one sperm cell can successfully fertilize the egg because once the first sperm cell penetrates the egg and fertilizes it, the egg membrane changes its structure to prevent entry of other sperm cells. This process, known as the zona reaction, ensures that only one sperm cell fuses with the egg to prevent multiple fertilizations.
