Why did many colonists in new England turn from farming to shipbuilding and fishing?

They were located on the coast and close to a harbor. There was an abundant supply of lumber and other Natural Resources. There was ship building expertise amonf the inhabitants. There was also a need for ships - this is an early example of capitalism.
