Why does my 1999 Oldsmobile Alero's gas gauge drop to E when I have at least half a tank of gas?

I am having kinda of like that same problem. my gauge reads fine till i get to approx. 1/4 tank. from there it bounces around going up and down not reading really anything. i have no idea what could be wrong.
