Most likely, the Mahabharata, as a major Sanskrit epic of ancient India, is the second longest of the world's known surviving epic poems. It fills more than 74,000 verses with about 1.8 million Words. It's thought that the epic was worked out, and added to, over the course of about 1,600-2,700 years [about the 8th century before Christ, to about the 4th century A.D.]. The longest most likely is the Epic of King Gesar. It packs over 20 million Words into more than 1 million verses. It's thought to be about 1,000 years old. And some 140 specially trained Ballad singers still recite the epic to Buryat, Mongolian, Tibetan and Tu ethnic audiences of Central Asia, and possibly still in Tibet.
