greater than the energy stored in the bonds of the products
Why?
Because when a chemical bond is formed, the resulting compound has less potential energy than the substances from which it was formed. Energy is always released when a bond is formed. The greater the energy released during the formation of a bond, the greater its stability. Consider the following reaction:
B + C ==> BC + 100 joules
The bond formed has less energy than the reactants because it released energy to form the resulting compound.
Exothermic means energy is being released. More energy is stored in the reactants, because that energy was released to form the compound.
