Is the cast away in Life of Pi real?

The purpose of the dual stories in Life of Pi is not for there to necessarily be a true answer. What Martel is trying to do is make the reader take a leap of faith and decide for themselves which story they believe is true. He leaves just enough evidence for both sides of the story to seem credible yet incredible at the same time. Really the true story is whatever story you want to believe.
