The galjoen, also known as the black bream or Dichistius capensis, is primarily found along the rocky shores and kelp forests of South Africa's coastline, particularly in the Atlantic Ocean. It is often sought after by anglers and divers in marine protected areas, as well as in regions with strong currents and varied underwater structures. Galjoen typically inhabit depths ranging from shallow waters to about 50 meters.
