The Union's efforts to conquer Richmond, the capital of the Confederacy, spanned multiple campaigns and battles over several years. The most significant attempts occurred during the Peninsular Campaign in 1862 and the Siege of Petersburg from 1864 to 1865. Ultimately, it was the combination of these sustained military efforts, along with the eventual capture of Petersburg in April 1865, that led to the fall of Richmond. The city was officially abandoned by Confederate forces on April 2, 1865, and occupied by Union troops shortly thereafter.
