Jefferson Davis was named the President of the Confederate States of America when the first southern states seceded from the Union in 1861. He was appointed to the position on February 9, 1861, and served throughout the Civil War. Davis was previously a U.S. Senator from Mississippi and had also held the position of Secretary of War. His leadership was marked by significant challenges as the Confederacy struggled against the Union forces.
