What religion did the Renaissance follow?

The spiritual underpinning of the Renaissance is often credit as being the Reformation.

It is commonly believed that, just as man came away from the dark ages and entered into a new era of light, even so; this same Divine inspiration from God wrought forth all manner of creative works, beautiful creations bore from minds touched by the very essence of life from God above.
