The Treaty of Versailles, which punished Germany financially, restricted their military capability and caused hyper inflation. The Germans considered this punishment to be too harsh (which it probably was) and under the influence of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party, started to rebuild their finances and military capability and therefore their national self esteem. Most of the population were obviously pleased to see this happen and therefore followed Hitler's policies, even though many of them were extreme. It has been said that if Hitler hadn't invaded other countries and started World War II, he would have been considered as one of the best political leaders of the 20th century.
