Studies have shown that individuals deprived of sleep for 24 hours, brain activity decreases significantly (up to 6% for the whole brain and up to 11% for specific areas). In humans, sleep deprivation also results in a decrease in core body temperature, a decrease in immune system function as measured by white cell count and activity, and a decrease in the release of growth hormone. Sleep deprivation has also been linked to increased heart rate variability.
Keep in mind that everyone requires a different amount of time to sleep per day, so reaction to sleep deprivation may vary person to person.
