Why would the temp gauge rise to max temp on a BMW 318i se e46 even though the car is cool and return to normal after a while but cause sluggish behavior even after replacing the thermo sensor?
A malfunctioning thermostat will do what you describe if it is opening at at very high temperature, at some point it probably will quit opening at all.
