When Poland regained independence after World War I, the Treaty of Versailles aimed to restore Polish sovereignty while also addressing ethnic and geopolitical concerns in Central Europe. The acquisition of the Polish Corridor, which separated East Prussia from the rest of Germany, was partly due to the need for Poland to have access to the Baltic Sea and to provide a viable economic route for trade and resources. This corridor also reflected the aspirations of the Polish population living in the region, despite the resulting division of German territory.
