Are you using an 'ionizer'? One of those gadgets that add copper and silver ions to the water? If so, your purple ring could be from that - the ions conmbined with added chlorine.
We just started having " the purple ring " . It seems to be from the corrosion of the brass in the pump. WHy? that we do not know as we have changed nothing in the environment or pool maintenance or additives since filling it five years ago. We are tracing tree pest spray as a possible source of the chemical change in the water.
I also have a purple ring around my pool and connecting spa. I have been using a "chlorine floater" and the PH level is very low, (not changing color at all when the test solution is added) I have added the recommended amount of soda ash, and still not getting good results, what's next???
If you regularly use an algaecide that contains copper in it, the level of copper will build in your pool and react with the chlorine sanitizer, creating the "purple ring."
Try using a product like "metal out" as instructed on the bottle. Vacuum your pool, backwash it, and switch to a non-copper based algaecide, to prevent future "Barney" rings.
I am hearing that the purple can be caused by the combination of copper and a high cyanuric acid level.
