Jefferson (and Washington) were an early abolitionists in Virginia. Jefferson was unable to free his slaves in such a way as to protect their marriages and families. He and Washington retained their ownership for that sole purpose. Washington was able to free his slaves in a protected manner (in his will), but by the time that Jefferson died, the slave-holding laws had been reinforced to prevent even such freedom.
